Your DGB for today is to listen and learn about poverty.
As progressives it can sometimes be easy to fall into the trap of thinking that being liberal means we automatically understand poverty. And while it seems clear that our side at least has a better handle on it, we still have much to learn. Even when we grew up lower class, lower working class or just plain broke, our own experiences can only teach us so much. And if we don’t know, we can’t really make much headway in defeating poverty as a society. Immigrant poverty, deep poverty, situational poverty - there is a lot of nuance that is necessary to be familiar with in order to build services and programs that meet the needs of the poor.
Dr. Donna Beegle, founder of Communication Across Barriers (learn more here: https://www.combarriers.com/aboutus) and poverty expert, recently sat down with SuChin Pak, of the podcast Open Account, to discuss poverty and in particular, Breaking the Poverty Cycle. It is Season 3 Episode 1 and available on iTunes or the Umpqua Bank website here: https://www.umpquabank.com/madetogrow/ . It’s a quick and interesting listen that we promise you will enjoy!
