Your DGB for today is to elect Black women running for office.
After Black women secured the win for Doug Jones in the Alabama Senate special election, they were rightfully thanked. That thanking, as it often does, turned into White people thanking themselves for thanking Black women and seeing who could really do the most with the thanking, and not doing much else. Example: Mark Ruffalo on Twitter -
“I’m definitely ready for that. I said a prayer the other day and when God answered me back she was a Black Woman.”
Enter the voice of reason and the Queen of Side Eye, Luvvie Ajayi, who is encouraging us all to put our money where our mouth is and not just thank a Black woman, but elect them too. With the help of others, a database has been put together where you can search for Black women running for office by your state. This list is not an endorsement, so please research these candidates and see if they align with your values and requirements for a candidate, and if they do, help get them elected. Volunteer for their campaign, donate, get the word out about their campaign, follow them on social media, and then most importantly, VOTE. But for the love of Judgey Pop, DO NOT personally message Luvvie with other candidates to add to her list. She’s on break for the rest of the year and she’s laid it all out in the link for how you can add candidates yourself. You can also donate to Higher Heights, and organization working to “harness Black women’s political power and leadership potential.”
