Um… Mr. President, You Actually Can’t Pardon Yourself

Your DGB for today is to remind the President that he can’t pardon himself and to contact your members of Congress and ask them what they’d do if Trump tried to pardon himself.

Donald Trump tweeted yesterday,

“As has been stated by numerous legal scholars, I have the absolute right to PARDON myself, but why would I do that when I have done nothing wrong? In the meantime, the never ending Witch Hunt, led by 13 very Angry and Conflicted Democrats (& others) continues into the mid-terms!” I mean, we know Trump doesn’t know history at all, but apparently he doesn’t know that Nixon asked if he could pardon himself and the Justice Department responded “Under the fundamental rule that no one may be a judge in his own case, the President cannot pardon himself.”

Tweet @realDonaldTrump with that exact quote and give him a quick history lesson. And while you’re at it, contact your member of Congress and ask them if they think Trump can pardon himself. Zodiac Killer and senator Ted Cruz of Texas was asked if the President can pardon himself. After an awkward 18 second pause, he responded “that is not a constitutional issue I have studied, so I will withhold judgement at this point.” We will remind you Cruz is a constitutional lawyer who wrote his Princeton senior thesis largely on the separation of government powers.

When you contact your members of Congress, tweet us or let us know on Facebook what the responses were. We need a good laugh and we’re ready with snacks.
