Don’t Be Fooled: Know Your Facts

Your DGB for today is to take the Pew Research Center’s quiz on how well you can sort fact from opinion.

Contrary to what the GOP would like you to believe, all opinions are not created equal. Facts may be uncomfortable, they may be hard to face, but they have the benefit of being, well, true. The Trump regime’s constant barrage of false, ridiculous, and even bizarre assertions can warp your mind to the point that it becomes difficult to filter what is fact from what is… alternative. POTUS himself has repeated the lies that “Democrats are for open borders,” that Obama tore kids from their parents too, and that the special counsel’s investigation is a “WITCH HUNT” so many times that it makes our heads swim. But we know better, right? As the late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-NY) said, “Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts.”

We want you to keep your mind sharp, so take the quiz and report back.

Are You an American Dream Sharer or Hoarder?

Your DGB for today is to uncover if you are a dream hoarder.

The excesses and atrocities of the American top 1 percent have been well documented. But did you know that you don’t have to be in the “Toilets of Gold” class to keep the poor from climbing out of poverty? The issue is opportunity hoarding by the upper middle class (top 20 percent) and it’s a serious problem in our country. There are real and tangible blockades to climbing the socioeconomic ladder and they don’t appear out of thin air. A book by Richard V. Reeves delves into this uncomfortable topic (find it on Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/Dream-Hoarders-American-Leaving-Everyone/dp/081572912X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1511964479&sr=8-1&keywords=dream+hoarding).

What we would like you to do today is to learn about this challenge and think about how you may be inadvertently participating in hoarding the American dream. Read about it here: https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2017/06/the-hoarding-of-the-american-dream/530481/. And take the quiz here: https://www.brookings.edu/book/dream-hoarders/

Grab back and share the Dream.

Human Rights Campaign Quiz

Your DGB for today is to take a quiz on LGBTQ+ history.

October is LGBTQ History Month and the Human Rights Campaign has a short quiz to honor the occasion. If you are, like, a smart person who has the best words, have a go at it.

You’ll take the quiz through Facebook messenger by following this link:

Note: DGB’s resident lesbian did poorly and is appropriately ashamed. She is saying 50 “Mike Pence”s as penance.

Would You Qualify for Immigration?

Your DGB for today is to take this quiz to see if you would qualify to immigrate to the United States under Trump’s new merit based immigration bill.

Donald Trump, along with Senators Tom Cotton (R-AR) and David Perdue (R-GA), can’t wait to upend United States immigration policy. Planned changes would halve green cards issued per year and use some pretty bizarre measurements to judge your value as an immigrant/human being. lf you’ve won an olympic medal, you get 25 points! In order to immigrate here, you would have to meet the minimum of 30 points. (Heads up- DGB staff did not do well. Sad!) Read more about the bill here: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2017/aug/2/trump-backs-immigration-bill-cut-green-card-limits/

Today we want you to take the quiz and share your results with us, as well as your friends. Get the word out that this proposed law is pretty damn classist, as well as cruel, as it also plans to limit permanent resident refugees down to 50,000 a year. The White House says that number is right in line with yearly averages, but this graph from Pew Research begs to differ.

Stephen Miller may not believe in the poem on the Statue of Liberty, but DGB does.

“Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

“I like big butts and I cannot lie.” -Thoreau

Your DGB for today is to take a short quiz on spotting fake quotations.

Fake or falsely attributed quotations are prevalent in politics on BOTH the right and left sides of the aisle.

As much as we want that Trump quote to be true, it’s not, and integrity is more important than schadenfreude, especially in the age of fake news and a Pathological Liar-In-Chief.

Sure, attribution of obscure quotations is a bit snobby and probably won’t make or break your success in life, but we do need to practice critical reading every chance we can get.
