Fear & Loathing in Washington, DC

9-6FearandLoathing2.jpg

Your DGB for today is to take a wee break from saving the world and have some fun. Do these three things to be entered into a drawing for a copy of Bob Woodward’s “Fear: Trump in the White House.”

1. Head on over to Twitter and follow us @DailyGrabBack, if you don’t already. 2. Tweet @DailyGrabBack with your best guess as to the identity of the New York Times’ Deep Throat. 3. Retweet our tweet about today’s Grab to be entered into a drawing for a copy of Bob Woodward’s book.

Yesterday was a rough day for #45, and over here at DGB the schadenfreude was palpable. First, excerpts of two-time Pulitzer-winner Bob Woodward’s book were all over social and traditional media, and they do NOT paint a flattering picture of Dear Leader. Then, last evening, an anonymous op-ed in the NYT by a “senior official” in the White House described a team of babysitters that manage the Toddler-in-Chief behind the scenes (and behind his back) so he doesn’t blow up the world on a daily basis. Ouch! That’s gotta sting.

But who IS this masked man (or woman)? Dan Coates? Kellyanne Conway? Barron? Come on, all you Nancy Drews, get out your comically-oversized magnifying glass and start sleuthing. We’ll announce the winner on Saturday.

Stop Kavanaugh Tweet Storm

9-3StopKavanaugh.jpg

Your DGB for today is to participate in this evening’s #StopKavanaugh Twitter movement.

Short update on the Brett Kavanaugh nomination: the Trump administration is citing executive privilege to prevent Senators from reviewing hundreds of pages of his records and Trump is still an unindicted co-conspirator in at least one federal case.* To sum up, this remains a nomination by an illegitimate president with a coverup to push it through. Democracy, y’all.

Follow this link to the Google Sheet you’ll use to automatically compose your tweets (you will have to log in once):

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Q4kCZXlYc9_IpV3eWzGyJ6dNixio3o4W9E1lW2X07eM/htmlview

The event begins at 8:00pm eastern, 5:00pm Pacific and you can feel free to also add your own #NoKavanaugh tweets.

*As of the writing of this Grab, more likely to be added

The Beat With Ari Melber and a White Supremacist

8-20SteveBannon.jpg

Your DGB for today is to let MSNBC know that Nazis don’t deserve airtime.

The left has a bad habit of intellectualizing extremism (and everything else, but that’s another Grab for another day.) Friday saw Ari Melber, host of MSNBC’s The Beat, interviewing an unemployed nazi by the name of Steve Bannon. In this political chaos, there are so many voices to amplify to the betterment of our country - why Bannon? Giving this jackass a platform not only caters to his overinflated sense of self, but also normalizes hate speech and equates opportunistic racists with actual political pundits. After perpetuating the Keeping Up With The KKK reality show that made it all the way to the White House, the media now has a responsibility to shape the narrative of hate as flatly unacceptable and unworthy of consideration. DGB thinks we should sentence those suffering from “economic anxiety” to a lifetime of promoting their platform on Reddit under the dim fluorescent light of their parents’ basement.

When you are telling MSNBC, its producers, and Ari himself that this is not acceptable, feel free to suggest other guests you’d rather see interviewed. Like a camel. Or a hand puppet. Or just an empty chair.

Um… Mr. President, You Actually Can’t Pardon Yourself

6-5KingTrump.jpg

Your DGB for today is to remind the President that he can’t pardon himself and to contact your members of Congress and ask them what they’d do if Trump tried to pardon himself.

Donald Trump tweeted yesterday,

“As has been stated by numerous legal scholars, I have the absolute right to PARDON myself, but why would I do that when I have done nothing wrong? In the meantime, the never ending Witch Hunt, led by 13 very Angry and Conflicted Democrats (& others) continues into the mid-terms!” I mean, we know Trump doesn’t know history at all, but apparently he doesn’t know that Nixon asked if he could pardon himself and the Justice Department responded “Under the fundamental rule that no one may be a judge in his own case, the President cannot pardon himself.” https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-06-04/trump-says-he-can-pardon-himself-nixon-was-told-he-couldn-t

Tweet @realDonaldTrump with that exact quote and give him a quick history lesson. And while you’re at it, contact your member of Congress and ask them if they think Trump can pardon himself. Zodiac Killer and senator Ted Cruz of Texas was asked if the President can pardon himself. After an awkward 18 second pause, he responded “that is not a constitutional issue I have studied, so I will withhold judgement at this point.” We will remind you Cruz is a constitutional lawyer who wrote his Princeton senior thesis largely on the separation of government powers. https://www.cnn.com/videos/politics/2018/06/04/ted-cruz-18-seconds-speechless-trump-pardon-question-ebof.cnn

When you contact your members of Congress, tweet us or let us know on Facebook what the responses were. We need a good laugh and we’re ready with snacks.

Things That Are Bad

2-9ScottPruitt.jpg

Your DGB for this weekend is to help the head of the EPA navigate the murky waters of facts.

Scott Pruitt, who we can safely assume did not obtain a degree in any sciences before he tripped and fell into politics, recently had this to say about Climate Change:

“I think there’s assumptions made that because the climate is warming, that that necessarily is a bad thing.”

And we all know what they say about assuming based on hypotheses proven by objective and verifiable observation, right? Those are facts.

Here are some examples of other empirically bad things you can Tweet at the EPA Administrator:

.@EPAScottPruitt I think there’s assumptions made that because cancer has spread, that that necessarily is a bad thing.

.@EPAScottPruitt I think there’s assumptions made that because a parachute doesn’t open, that that necessarily is a bad thing.

.@EPAScottPruitt I think there’s assumptions made that because you were hit by a car, that that necessarily is a bad thing.

Out With John Kelly

2-8JohnKelly.jpg

Your DGB for today is to demand White House Chief of Staff John Kelly’s resignation.

White House staffer Rob Porter resigned yesterday, after reports that he abused both of his ex wives surfaced Tuesday. He’s a piece of shit and no one is surprised, least of all Senior White House staff. They’ve known since LAST FALL. Not only that, but they both defended him and expanded his role since then.

John Kelly’s statement on the matter included this passage:

"Rob Porter is a man of true integrity and honor and I can't say enough good things about him.”

And here’s a photo of what Porter did to wife Colbie Holderness in 2005:

Kelly doesn’t get to stick around after this. Let @PressSec on Twitter know it’s time for him to resign.

#DGB #TBT Flint, Michigan

12-21throwbackthursday_720.jpg

Your DGB for this Throwback Thursday is to keep Flint, Michigan’s bottled water program running.

Flint has been without safe tap water for 1,336 days now in what continues to be a massive infrastructure failure. Pipe replacement is still underway in many places. The tap water is allegedly testing closer to safe levels of metals in some areas, leading to threats to reevaluate the state-run bottled water program by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. https://www.theroot.com/flint-state-may-reconsider-free-bottled-water-program-1821141898

Employees of this office have been criminally charged in the #FlintWaterCrisis, striking plea deals as recently as this week, so forgive us if we give them the side-eye.

Today, you’ll tweet @MichiganDEQ to let them know we see them and they need to keep safe drinking water available to the humans they’re charged with protecting.

#MeAt14

untitled_design__70__720.jpg

Your DGB for today is to post a picture on Twitter or Facebook, of you at age 14, with the hashtag #MeAt14.

Unless you completely tune out the news, you’ve likely heard the recent allegations against Alabama senate candidate Roy Moore, in which there are multiple claims of sexual relationships with teen girls, one as young as 14. https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/woman-says-roy-moore-initiated-sexual-encounter-when-she-was-14-he-was-32/2017/11/09/1f495878-c293-11e7-afe9-4f60b5a6c4a0_story.html?utm_term=.d6d7b8537fbb

According to statistics, 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys will be sexually abused as children. 16% of girls will suffer abuse during the ages of 14-17. http://victimsofcrime.org/media/reporting-on-child-sexual-abuse/child-sexual-abuse-statistics Monsters like Roy Moore will have you believe a 14 year old can consent. They can’t. It’s rape. Join the movement and post a picture of yourself at 14 and encourage others to talk about what we can do to stop childhood sexual abuse and the sexualization of teen girls.

You can also donate to organizations like RAINN.org https://donate.rainn.org, who offer support and counseling to victims of rape, assault, and incest. And lastly, if you need to report sexual abuse, please call 1-800-656-HOPE, and help end the abuse.

Donald Trump Doesn’t Care About Puerto Ricans

Your DGB for today is to remind Trump that he has never cared about the best interests of Puerto Rico.

Back in 2008, Trump companies made some big promises to slap their name on a failing golf resort and turn the operation into some sort of bigly success. Like most of their other money-making schemes, they stood to profit whether the resort itself did or not. By 2012, Trump & Sons had driven it even farther into the ground. They took their $600,000 and bounced, leaving the small island territory with a bankrupt property in the critical tourism industry. Puerto Rico managed to recover, as we know they will after the devastation from Hurricane Maria. Just like back then, it’ll be no thanks to Trump.

DGB doesn’t know the exact whereabouts of Kanye West, but we need him to show up and make one of his post-hurricane declarations on this. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/kanye-west-george-bush-black-people_us_55d67c12e4b020c386de2f5e In lieu of putting us in touch with Yeezy, you’ll channel LeBron James and tweet something to the tune of

.@realDonaldTrump U bum, use your $600K profit from your failed Puerto Rico golf course to help their humanitarian crisis NOW.

On Fridays, We Take a Knee

untitled_design__54__720.jpg

Your DGB for today is to plan to participate in the Twitter protest of the treatment of Black americans by taking a knee at 1:00 pm EST tomorrow, the 29th.

After Trump’s comments calling for NFL owners to fire anyone that takes a knee for the National Anthem, more than 100 NFL players, coaches, and owners took a knee on Sunday and Monday. We applaud the NFL players for taking a stand against the rhetoric of Donald Trump.

The focus for Friday’s protest isn’t about Trump though, it is about the treatment of Black men and women in america, whether it’s from systemic racism, or violence and murder by police officers without impunity. So tomorrow we ask that you join Twitterdom and take a knee at 1:00 pm EST no matter where you are. Take a knee and say the names of the over 250 Black people killed by police officers in 2016. If you want, take a picture and post in on social media with #TakeAKnee and make sure to support others who are standing… or kneeling against racism.

Take a Knee

9-26takeaknee_720.jpg

Your DGB for today is to tweet your support for Colin Kaepernick and members of the NFL who have refused to stand for the national anthem in order to bring attention to social justice and civil rights issues.

Read this powerful piece by Kaepernick’s teammate Eric Reid. Peaceful protest is both an important component of social change and protected by our Constitution. In addition, there is no better cause than the fight against the systemic oppression of People of Color. It is national tragedy that the current occupant of the Oval Office respects neither the cause nor the right to protest. But we can do something.

On social media, use the hashtags #TakeAKnee, #BLM, and #BlackLivesMatter. Signal boost and center the voices of the marginalized, of those protesting, of those under the thumb of oppression. We are better than our so-called leader - let’s show it.

The Truth Hurts

Your DGB for today is to support ESPN reporter, Jemele Hill. If you haven’t been on twitter lately, or heard any news, you might not have heard the controversy surrounding the ESPN reporter, Jemele Hill. On 9/11/2017 Hill tweeted that Donald Trump was a white supremacist. I mean...the statement isn’t a lie, and since then people have been coming hard for her. Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders even went as far as to say that it was a fire-able offense and that Hill should lose her job with ESPN. The president even did some early morning tweeting regarding this issue because he's a small, fragile man. https://twitter.com/realdonaldtrump/status/908651641943003136 What we want you to do today is to express your support for Jemele Hill. You can either retweet her or tweet your support out to her. You can find the painfully truthful tweet here: https://twitter.com/jemelehill/status/907391978194849793 You can also contact ESPN and urge them to back her a little harder than they are right now. Another option is to start watching her on ESPN’s SportsCenter at 6:00 pm. Donald Trump is a white supremacist. People shouldn’t lose their jobs or have their lives threatened for speaking the truth. We need more people like Jemele Hill, so stand up and support her so others feel encouraged to come forward.

Michael Bennett

9-9MichaelBennett.jpg

Your DGB for today is to publicly shame the Las Vegas Police Department for their treatment of Michael Bennett.

In an August 26th incident at a Las Vegas nightclub, the Seahawks Defensive End was handcuffed, threatened, and assaulted by Las Vegas Metro PD officers. After hearing what most assumed were gunshots, Bennett and others ran for safety, which officers apparently decided was some sort of admission of guilt. There wasn’t actually a shooting that day, just your usual law enforcement profiling and excessive force. Bennett has stated that an officer held a gun to his head and said he would “blow my fucking head off.” Read his statement here: https://twitter.com/mosesbread72?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor

Not only does the department stand by the actions of their officers, they actually had the nerve to ask the NFL to investigate Bennett for false allegations in a letter which included the following:

"While the NFL may condone Bennett's disrespect for our American Flag, and everything it symbolizes, we hope the League will not ignore Bennett's false accusations against our police officers."

(Bennett, among other NFL players, has declined to stand during the national anthem.) But sure… it’s not about race. Commissioner Roger Goodell refused the request and instead released a statement standing by his players. https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-rejects-las-vegas-police-union-request-wont-investigate-michael-bennett/

Today, you’ll tweet the Las Vegas Metro PD @LVMPD to let them know we see their racism and overreach. Here’s a DGB sample tweet:

.@LVMPD Your treatment of @mosesbread72 during and after the 8/26 incident is disgusting, racist, and unacceptable. Apologize now.

Protect The Cape Cod National Seashore

Your DGB for today is to tweet Bill Keating (D-MA-9) and let him know you’re concerned about the future of the Cape Cod National Seashore.

Recently, the Trump administration ordered a halt to the Cape Cod National Seashore Advisory Commission, which has overseen the management of the 44,000 acre preserved land since 1961. While the organization does not make policy, their oversight is a layer of protection for the forty miles of unspoiled beaches, marshes, and cultural landmarks. Under Trump, and Secretary of the Interior, Ryan Zinke, the conservation of public lands is, at best, a low priority. At worst, our federal government could be moving toward land transfer deals and commercial interests in some of the places that truly make our country great.

Congressman Keating is a Democrat and a conservationist, so we just need to let him know that we care and there will be public pressure to help him preserve the beautiful open spaces in his district.

Example:

.@USRepKeating We won’t stand for the suspension of the CCNS Advisory Commission or the deprioritizing of public lands. #ProtectTheCape

School Shootings Are Real

Your DGB for today is to tell Trump to denounce the Sandy Hook conspiracy hoax.

Alex Jones, friend of Trump and all-around lunatic, has promoted the insane claim that the Newtown, CT school massacre was staged by the government. As a result, the families of the twenty children and six adults who died that day have been harassed and tormented by his followers. Seven weeks ago, the Newtown School Board wrote to Trump begging him to intervene. He has yet to respond.

Today, you’ll contact Trump by tweeting him @WhiteHouse, @POTUS, and @realDonaldTrump.

Sample tweet: .@POTUS Unlike the Bowling Green massacre, Sandy Hook was real. At least respond to the Newtown School Board’s letter sent 7 weeks ago.

In light of yet another tragic school shooting yesterday, it’s more important than ever that this idiocy comes to an end. Thoughts and prayers will never be enough. Trump needs to publicly disavow Jones and his dangerous brand of bullshit.
