Support the NDRC

12-15redistricting_720.jpg

Your DGB for today is to support the National Democratic Redistricting Commission (NDRC).

Doug Jones won in Alabama! Yay! A lot of people poured their time and money into making that a reality. Tens of thousands of people gave up their precious time to wait in line and vote. A hearty thank you to each and every one of them, from the DNC to the NAACP to the voters themselves, particularly the Black men and women of Alabama.

BUT.

Last Tuesday’s vote was a statewide election. Every vote was equal. However, in many places those votes aren’t equal. Partisan politicians have drawn the districting lines to favor their own party and disfavor their competition. The elections are literally rigged - legally. If the same voters turned out at the 2018 Congressional elections, Alabama would not have 4 Democratic and 3 Republican Representatives, they would be represented by 1 Democrat and 6 Republicans. This does not accurately represent people of Alabama, and it’s intentional.

You can be a part of the solution.

Go to https://democraticredistricting.com/get-involved/ to find out how you can be a part of the NDRC. There are a list of ways that you can contribute your resources to help level the playing field and ensure that all Americans are equally represented in our government.

Make Redistricting Sexy

Your DGB for today is to team up with Eric Holder and make redistricting sexy.

Former Attorney General Eric Holder and some of his coolest friends (psstt...it’s Barack Obama) are teaming up to work on redistricting for 2021. Yes, we understand that is a VERY long way away, and if 45 stays our president for the next 3 years, 3 months, and 22 days, give or take (we’re bad at math) then it is going to feel like a thousand lifetimes. But just because it’s far off doesn’t mean we shouldn’t plan for it. Redistricting and gerrymandering have a huge impact on elections. At least 16 GOP House seats are a direct result of gerrymandering and if we want future elections to fair, then we need to start working on it now.

Here’s where the National Democratic Redistricting Committee enters. They are working to build a state-by-state strategy that produces fairer maps for future elections and “makes redistricting sexy.” How do you help? You can either donate or sign up to be on the NDRC.

Let’s work with Holder and the NDRC and bring fair redistricting back, because those Republicans don’t know how to act.

Taking Back the House in 2018, Part Three

Your DGB for today is to organize a voter registration drive. You’ve done the homework, you’ve become a registrar, and now it’s time to get out there in your community and register people to vote.

If you need a quick refresher on parts one and two, start at researching how to become a registrar in your state. Then move onto actually becoming a registrar and how we can make gerrymandering work for us by getting more people registered to vote.

Next, go to the American Association of University Women’s website and read all of their tips for how to organize a voter registration drive. They give you advice like where to hold your drive, how to find your state’s rules on who can register to vote, how to recruit and train volunteers, and more.

When you hold your drive, post your pictures on social media and hashtag  them with #DGBTakingBackTheHouse2018. We can’t wait to see all of your hard work in action.

Taking Back the House in 2018, Part Two

Your DGB for today is to become a registrar in your state. Did you do your homework we assigned you two weeks ago? You’ve done the research, now it’s time to become a registrar.

We need to first discuss gerrymandering if we are registering people to vote. Gerrymandering is a manipulative redistricting tactic republicans have used to ensure they win much needed seats in the House and the Senate. The good news about gerrymandering is it may work in Democrats favor, come 2018. This article describes exactly how that could happen. The most effective way to work around gerrymandering for 2018 is to register people to vote, particularly in swing districts and states.

We’re giving you two more weeks to become a registrar in your state. You can find your local election office here; they’ll have the info you need to become a registrar. Get to it because our third grab on voter registration in two weeks we will be asking you to set up a voter registration event in your community. Yes, we know this is a lot more than five minutes a day, but we have to up our ante to fight 45 and his administration. Make gerrymandering work for us in 2018 and become a registrar.
