Independence Day

Who’s Independence?

Your DGB for today is to read Frederick Douglass’ famous speech “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July.”

On Independence Day every year, Americans celebrate the United States freedom from Great Britain and the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

It’s important to note that the Declaration of Independence did not mean freedom for all. Our nation continued to enslave people for almost 100 years and that is why we ask you to read this speech today.

We continue to live in trying times that leave us questioning our patriotism and we ask that you continue to fight for the country that you want.

“What, to the American slave, is your Fourth of July?

“I answer: a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciation of tyrants, brass-fronted impudence; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanksgivings, with all your religious parade and solemnity, mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and hypocrisy—a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages…

No man can put a chain about the ankle of his fellow man without at last finding the other end fastened about his own neck.”

Fourth of July

Your DGB for today is to keep persisting for the sake of the country.

That’s basically it. It’s the Fourth of July and it’s hard to want to celebrate with You Know Who as our president. It really takes the the wind out of our American Flags, so all we are asking you to do today is to find a way to keep persisting.

Write to your congress members and tell them what what your ideal America looks like. Send a thank you card to any congress member who is fighting the good fight. Attend one of the many rallies or protests across the country today. Check out  our list of other resisters and feel joy that you aren’t fighting this alone. Watch this Samantha Bee / Elizabeth Warren interview to inspire you a bit.

If nothing else, fire up the majesty that is Independence Day with Will Smith and bask in the patriotic warmth of watching Americans kick some extraterrestrial ass.

Baby, You’re a Firework

Your DGB for today is to make a plan for the 4th of July Senate Recess to blow stuff up... not literally, more in the Katy Perry Firework anthem way, like showing them what you’re worth and stuff.

Has the Senate ever made you feel like a plastic bag, drifting through the wind? Maybe even wanting to start with a new Senate again? Us too. (Just picture fireworks exploding from our chest right now and it’s magical.) The current republican majority Senate is certainly wasting space and we just want you to make their lives a living hell over their break.

So, how exactly can you do that? Check to see if they are brave enough to hold a town hall over the break (most aren’t) and attend it. If they say something you don’t agree with, let them know. If they aren’t holding town halls, show up at their local office, they LOVE that. Bring a friend and celebrate the 4th of July week like you would Festivus, with an airing of grievances. We don’t recommend feats of strength unless you’re looking to get carried away by the police.

We realize we are creating an unholy mix of Katy Perry and Seinfeld references right now, but it just might be the spark you need to ignite...the light...and let it shine! Get out there this Senate break and open up closed doors and really just annoy your Senator so much they vote no on the AHCA. (Maybe even just playing Firework by Katy Perry over and over and over while you’re in a town hall or in their office will do the trick.)
