Check It Out: Your Voter Registration

10-9TripleCheckRegistration.jpg

The clock is winding down, Grabbers. We are in the 4th quarter, the 9th inning, the third act, the final lap. The midterms are almost here and we want to avoid the use of provisional ballot tomfoolery as much as we can. Today is the LAST DAY to register in many states. Your DGB is to double check that you are registered. And if you are in a red state and/or one of those problematic states that likes to purge voters for no reason, we want you to check AND pester at least one friend to check as well. Georgia voters get a special task, check the link below to see if you are one of the unlucky (we say in a voice dripping with sarcasm) voters that got purged recently.

Resistbot to the Rescue Again

10-04Resistbot.jpg

Your DGB for today is to use Resistbot - an already insanely useful tool - to check on your voter registration status. With voter rolls being purged in some states, how much people move, and just how busy many of us are, it’s easy to lose track of whether or not we’re registered at our current location. And baby, we GOTTA vote this November. It is non-negotiable.

You already know you can text “RESIST” to 50409 to contact your members of congress and do other cool stuff.  Now you can text “vote” to the same number to check your registration, get information on absentee ballots, and even register to vote. It’s pretty sweet.

Please don’t sit this one out. It’s all on the line. We need a big, blue wave in November to put out the dumpster fire we call trumpism.

Get Your Required Voter ID Squared Away

7-18VoteRider.jpg

Quick, without Googling, do you know what identification your state requires in order to vote? Many states have adopted new voter ID rules so it is vitally important to stay on top of this information in preparation for the upcoming midterm elections. The organization VoteRider has gathered up all the various regulations into one handy resource. They even created a wallet card you can carry around and reference while you are out and about encouraging your fellow liberals to vote in November (which you are totally doing, right?) Your DGB for today is to go to this site and do a quick check to see if you are ready. Just click on the plus sign next to the name of your state and get informed: http://voteriders.daileydev.net/voter-id-info-cards/

Once you are in your state’s window you can print out the nifty wallet card and even check to see if you are registered. Have a bit more time on your hands? There are resources here to help you run a voter ID clinic or help someone get the identification they need to vote: https://www.voteriders.org/get-involved/voter-id-clinics/

The best and only way to stop Trump is to send a Blue Wave to Congress in November. The GOP has worked hard to keep people away from the polls by creating bureaucratic barriers. Let’s make sure they aren’t successful.

Are You Registered to Vote?

6-11Register.jpg

Your DGB for today is to confirm that you are, indeed, registered to vote in the state, county, and city in which you intend to cast your ballot in November.

Today the Supreme Court handed down a decision that is Very Bad News for voting rights in the US. Husted (short for Husted, Ohio Sec. of State v. A. Philip Randolph Institute et al.) makes it legal for states to purge voter rolls of folks who’ve been infrequent voters. That’s it. These will be people who’ve committed no crime other than to fail to make it to the polls for some arbitrary number of elections. Of course, as is often the case with voter suppression, this will affect certain groups more than others - namely, people of color, senior citizens, folks with disabilities, and the poor.

This is a blow to our democratic process, but we can combat it. After confirming that you are still registered, see if friends or family need help checking their own status. Depending on your state, it may be important to do this well ahead of November. If someone finds that they need to register, help them with that, too.

It should be clear to everyone by now that not even Trump’s impeachment will be the end of this horrendous mess. The whole complicit GOP needs to be booted out of Washington and we can only do that if we all VOTE.

Taking Back the House in 2018, Part Three

Your DGB for today is to organize a voter registration drive. You’ve done the homework, you’ve become a registrar, and now it’s time to get out there in your community and register people to vote.

If you need a quick refresher on parts one and two, start at researching how to become a registrar in your state. Then move onto actually becoming a registrar and how we can make gerrymandering work for us by getting more people registered to vote.

Next, go to the American Association of University Women’s website and read all of their tips for how to organize a voter registration drive. They give you advice like where to hold your drive, how to find your state’s rules on who can register to vote, how to recruit and train volunteers, and more.

When you hold your drive, post your pictures on social media and hashtag  them with #DGBTakingBackTheHouse2018. We can’t wait to see all of your hard work in action.

Taking Back the House in 2018, Part Two

Your DGB for today is to become a registrar in your state. Did you do your homework we assigned you two weeks ago? You’ve done the research, now it’s time to become a registrar.

We need to first discuss gerrymandering if we are registering people to vote. Gerrymandering is a manipulative redistricting tactic republicans have used to ensure they win much needed seats in the House and the Senate. The good news about gerrymandering is it may work in Democrats favor, come 2018. This article describes exactly how that could happen. The most effective way to work around gerrymandering for 2018 is to register people to vote, particularly in swing districts and states.

We’re giving you two more weeks to become a registrar in your state. You can find your local election office here; they’ll have the info you need to become a registrar. Get to it because our third grab on voter registration in two weeks we will be asking you to set up a voter registration event in your community. Yes, we know this is a lot more than five minutes a day, but we have to up our ante to fight 45 and his administration. Make gerrymandering work for us in 2018 and become a registrar.

Taking Back the House in 2018, Part One

Your DGB for today is to educate yourself on how to register people to vote. We are going to do three Grabs on making yourself and your friends into registrars in your state to increase our chances of taking back some of the power in the Senate and Congress.

The first baby step that needs to be done is checking your own voter registration status and registering to vote, if necessary. You can check your status here and even register online in some states. The next step is to research what you have to do in order to register people to vote yourself. Each state has different rules and requirements to register people to vote. You can find your local election office here and call or email them and ask them what the rules are for your state and county. You can also join the League of Women Voters and check out their website for additional tips on how to get ready to register people to vote.

Before taking on any big project, it’s always important to educate yourself on what needs to be done, so this is our very first step in getting more people registered to vote.Today we are just asking you to spend five minutes making sure you are registered to vote, and looking into what you need to do to start registering people to vote. Our next voter registration Grab will be in two weeks, and we expect you all to have done your homework and be prepared to work.

The 2018 elections seem so far away, but people around the country are already gearing up for it, whether it be throwing their hat into the ring or getting as many people registered to vote as possible. Help us take back some power so that 45 has the checks and balances he so desperately needs.
