WTF Is Brexit

Have you been putting off learning about Brexit? Like, maybe forever? Has it been too long to ask your friends to explain it now? UK Politics are mad confusing, but, to be fair, Britons are probably pretty perplexed about how we got ourselves into our current position as well.

Your DGB for today is to review this BBC Brexit explainer. We guarantee you’ll feel cultured and informed afterward.

Greg Abbott, Stand Up

Last week, the death of a seven-year-old girl in Customs and Border Patrol custody in El Paso made the news as it highlighted the cruelty of current treatment of migrants.

This Guatemalan child had a nearly 106 degree fever and succumbed to dehydration and shock. Few details have been released.

Your DGB for today is to contact Texas Governor Greg Abbott and demand answers and accountability from CBP. Use the handy “I want to share my opinion” button at the link below, because do we ever.

$5 For A Safe Birth in Yemen

Your DGB for today is to send a couple of dollars to the UNFPA

With the holidays, the recent elections and the ongoing chaos of the Trump administration it’s easy to overlook the goings-on outside the U.S. border (and we didn’t even mention the border situation). DGB-ers, the situation in Yemen is dire. After years of civil war, sanctions from Saudi Arabia and an unstable government the country is on the very brink of famine. You can read more about it here:

A safe birth kit assembled by the UNFPA can provide sterile supplies to local midwives and volunteers for only $5. These kits can and do save the lives of delivering mothers. Make your donation here:

Grab your PayPal or debit card information and help a mother give birth safely.

William Barr

After firing Attorney General Jeff Sessions and ignoring the chain of command by installing Matthew Whitaker, Trump finally came up with a new nominee for the position.

William Barr is quite a guy. Here’s some further reading on that:

Your DGB for today is to contact your senators and let them know that you oppose Barr for AG using Resistbot.

Dan McCready

It’s safe to say the election on November 7th didn’t go well in North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District. There’s still no winner, Democrat Dan McCready had to unconcede, and there have been widespread allegations of fraud - a story that has mostly slipped through the cracks with all the Cohen/Manafort/Flynn business.

Your DGB for today is to help McCready gear up for what is likely to be a long fight and possibly another election. You can still donate and volunteer through his campaign site here:

Clinton Impeachment

Oh, Lindsey. As prosecutor in Bill Clinton’s 1999 impeachment trial, the now senator was super clear in his feelings about removing a president from office. In part, his words included the following quotes:

“You don’t even have to be convicted of a crime to lose your job (as president) in this constitutional republic if this body determines your conduct as a public official is clearly out of bounds in your role.”

“Because impeachment is not about punishment. Impeachment is about cleansing the office. Impeachment is about restoring honor and integrity to the office.”

Wow, huh? Your DGB for today is to remind Graham of his passionate defense of the office of the Presidency with his own words. Contact him below.

Cyntoia Brown

When Cyntoia Brown was just 16 years old, she shot and killed a man in Tennessee who had taken her to his house for sex. She was tried as an adult on charges of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Learn more about Cyntoia’s story by watching the documentary Me Facing Life: Cyntoia’s Story, searching the hashtag #FreeCyntoiaBrown, or reading this article.

Your DGB for today is to contact Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam, who is reviewing this case, and ask him to help Cyntoia.

Black Lives Matter Store

Your DGB for this weekend is to check out the recently-launched official Black Lives Matter product store.

Although BLM merchandise has existed for years, none were officially-licensed or directly benefited the movement. Shop here:

And don’t forget to attend a local event as well.

Gillian Anderson Charities

On the 36th birthday of one of DGB’s co-founders, we explore the charities endorsed by the inimitable Gillian Anderson.

Your DGB for today is to donate to one of the organizations featured on her website here:

You can also purchase her most recent project- a t-shirt designed for Women for Women International UK- here:

Sackcloth + Ashes

Working on your holiday shopping? Your DGB for today is to consider purchasing a blanket from Sackcloth + Ashes. For every blanket you buy, they donate one to your local homeless shelter. We at DGB can personally verify that these blankets are AWESOME, super warm, and get softer with every wash.

Link a Child to Music

Your DGB for today is to support MusicLink and help a kid get music lessons. Musical education is extremely beneficial for humans of any age but especially for the developing minds of children. The cost of lessons and instruments can price out families that don’t have the extra money to spend. You can help by offering your skills, time, an instrument you don’t use or a couple of dollars.

MusicLink connects kids to music instructors that are willing to donate or discount their skills and time. If you can support them that way go here:

Do you have a playable instrument laying around collecting dust? Find out how to help that way here:

And of course, cash is always the right size, always the right color:

No parent should miss out on the opportunity to hear songs they once liked played poorly over and over and over until they beg for mercy. Grab that old tuba from your glory days and send it to a kid in need.

Fugitive Slave Ads

Your DGB for today is to check out the Freedom on the Move collection from Cornell University. Both heartbreaking and inspiring, this is a curation of fugitive slave ads from North American publications. These are a bracing window into the ultimate resistance stories of enslaved people who ran.

Obamacare Open Enrollment

Your DGB for this weekend is to get the word out about ACA Open Enrollment.

Petty McTrump has again tried to undermine statistical interest in the Affordable Care Act by refusing to advertise open enrollment periods on the healthcare marketplace. It’s up to us to spread the word. People have until December 15th to purchase a plan or qualify for a subsidized plan.

Climate Change Report

Your DGB for today is to read some or all of the climate change report the government sneakily released on Friday while most of us were either waking up from our post-Thanksgiving food coma, or standing in line for a great deal on a flat screen TV. I guess the Trump administration was hoping we wouldn’t notice the alarm bells and emergency sirens coming from the Fourth National Climate Assessment.

It’s… not good. But knowledge, as we are fond of saying, is power. So read the Summary Findings and Overview and if you have time, the chapter on your region. Then redouble your commitment to supporting and electing policy-makers who take climate change seriously. WAY too many people - including you-know-who-in-chief think it’s a hoax. At least we have the House and many more governor’s mansions under Dem control. It’s a start.

Survival International

You probably saw the story about the American missionary killed on a remote Indian island last week. John Allen Chau illegally visited North Sentinel Island in an attempt to introduce Christianity to the Sentinelese people, who have called the remote Andaman island home for somewhere in the range of 80,000 years and have made it pretty clear they want to be left alone.

Your DGB for today is to donate to Survival International, which helps preserve uncontacted tribes all over the world. Read their profile on the Sentinelese here:

We Still Live Here

11-27 Wampanoagdocumentary.jpg

Your DGB for today is to buy or rent the documentary We Still Live Here about the Wampanoag tribe--yes THAT Wampanoag tribe. This is the group of people whose ancestors kept the Pilgrims from starving and whose kindness is “honored” annually by American schoolchildren dressed up in brown paper bags. This movie is about their work to revive their ancestral language and preserve their culture.

Please rent or purchase the movie here (rental is only $3.99, purchase is only $9.99):

You can learn more about it here:

Grab some popcorn and fire up your laptop or smart TV.

Mike Espy

Midterm elections still aren’t over. Mississippi’s Cindy Hyde-Smith heads to a runoff with challenger Mike Espy tomorrow, after no single candidate received 50% of the votes on November 6th.

Hyde-Smith somehow still leads in every poll despite her comments about “public hangings”, endorsement of voter suppression, and photo shoot with confederate paraphernalia. Your DGB for today is to help elect Mississippi’s first black democratic senator by getting the vote out tomorrow.

The Season Is Upon Us

Bet you thought we meant shopping season. Nope, we’re talking about the long and destructive fire season in California. Okay, actually it’s not technically “fire season” anymore - that’s generally considered to last June through October-ish. However, mega-fires raging all over the state in recent years have basically obliterated that concept. California is now on fire all the time, with images coming out of the devastation not unlike those from an apocalyptic movie.

Your DGB for this weekend is to look into how you can help.

Red Cross is always an excellent place to start for disaster relief charity

If you live in California, consider donating housing to evacuees via Air BNB

United Way NorCal and United Way Greater LA are both great places to donate and volunteer.

California Fire Foundation is an excellent way to support those firefighters out on the frontlines

#DGB #TBT Flint

What will you be drinking today? Whatever it is, one thing you probably won’t be worried about is whether or not your water is safe to consume or cook with. Unless you live in Flint, MI.

The city is about ⅓ of the way through a lawsuit-mandated pipe- replacement project and at least one former official will stand trial on charges of manslaughter stemming from bacterial outbreaks. Insultingly, people are still receiving municipal water bills, at one point even being told to let their water run continuously in order to help “coat” the insides of new pipes.

At this point, residents have been victimized and lied to so many times, many will probably never trust the water again. Would you? Free bottled water programs were shuttered, but many people are still using bottled water. No one should have to be afraid to give their child a glass of water.

While nothing is going to undo the damage to an entire community, your DGB for this Thanksgiving Throwback Thursday is to spread some knowledge and resources.

Flint residents can both apply for free lead testing and for help with their water bill.

For insight into how this all happened, read The Poisoned City by Anna Clark @annaleighclark

Proof of Collusion

Looking for a little feel-good holiday reading? You came to the wrong place. Ain’t no Hallmark channel shit around these parts.

Your DGB for today is to read Proof of Collusion by Seth Abramson, a chronology of Donald Trump’s work with Russia from the 1980’s to present day.

Don’t forget to use Amazon Smile to support your favorite charity every time you buy.
